What does this funding get me?
Grants to help nonprofits do energy efficiency work. Two programs have funding cycles in the Southeast that close in April and May of 2025:
- Good Use (subgrants up to $120,000 from the Southface Institute; requires cost-share)
- GoodUse provides matching grants for nonprofits ranging from food banks to arts organizations. Start your application today to upgrade your facilities, reduce utility costs, and reinvest in your mission—all with the support of technical assistance to ensure impactful, lasting results.
- BUILT Nonprofits through TechWerx (Congratulations to Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh, one of 22 recipients in 2024)
- The Joint Assessment of Resilience in Vulnerable Infrastructure Systems (JARVIS) Opportunity will provide funding to utilities to deploy advanced technologies and incorporate modeling to identify and mitigate grid vulnerabilities, enabling greater integration across diverse energy portfolios. JARVIS will provide awards of approximately $1M each and is making $35 million currently available.
Am I eligible?
Both programs are open to nonprofit organizations who own and operate their own buildings, but may differ in additional requirements. Please use the links in the section below to learn about each.
How can I access the money?
- Good Use (Due April 11, 2025)
- Nonprofits must complete the eligibility survey and application to be considered for GoodUse. The application includes organizational background and facility information. Applications undergo a third-party and financial review that helps identify which nonprofits will be awarded based on each applicant’s impact, need, and mission.

What is the timeline?
See above.
What other incentives could I use to help me accomplish my goals?
- Nonprofits can transfer the 179D energy efficiency tax deduction to their contractor in exchange for a lower price.
- Check the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency (DSIRE) for additional incentives that may be offered by your state, local government, or utility, as well as important federal, state, and local policies. For questions regarding DSIRE, contact Justin Lindemann (NC Clean Energy Technology Center) at jplindem@ncsu.edu.
