# Strengthen Your Roof

Funding for: [Homeowners](https://energyfundsforall.org/category/homeowners/), [Landlords](https://energyfundsforall.org/category/landlords/)

Goal: [Economic justice](https://energyfundsforall.org/tag/economic-justice/), [Increase community resilience](https://energyfundsforall.org/tag/resilience/), [Increase my property value](https://energyfundsforall.org/tag/increase-my-property-value/)

## What does this funding get me?

The North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association (NCIUA) offers its policyholders up to $10,000 toward the price of a new roof in coastal NC counties. Roofs are built to “FORTIFIED” standards developed by the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) that are designed to increase resilience to extreme weather. For low-income homeowners, the Clean Energy Fund of the Carolinas offers a supplemental grant up to $5,000.

## Am I eligible?

Any home covered by an NCIUA policy and located in the following areas is eligible:

* [Strengthen Your Roof](https://strengthenyourroof.com/Home/FAQ): Up to $10,000 for a FORTIFIED roof on the Outer Banks or barrier islands
* [Strengthen Your Coastal Roof](https://strengthenyourcoastalroof.com/Home/FAQ): Up to $6,000 for a FORTIFIED roof on coastal properties in Beaufort, Brunswick, Camden, Carteret, Chowan, Craven, Currituck, Dare, Hyde, Jones, New Hanover, Onslow, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Pender, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington counties.

Low-income homeowners are eligible for an additional grant of up to $5,000 from the Clean Energy Fund of the Carolinas. To qualify, a household must be at or below [200% of the Federal Poverty Level](https://cefcarolinas.org/fortified-roof-grants/) or already enrolled in another income-qualified program such as WIC, Medicaid, LIHEAP, WAP, Lifeline, SSI, Section 8, or the National School Lunch Program.

## How can I access the money?

To apply for the NCIUA program, click the link above under “Am I eligible?” for the program that applies to your area.

For the low-income supplemental loan from Clean Energy Fund of the Carolinas, [apply here](https://cefcarolinas.org/fortified-roof-grants/) or email Emily Velasquez ([emilyv@cefcarolinas.org](mailto:emilyv@cefcarolinas.org)).

## What is the timeline?

The NCIUA grants are available until further notice. The low-income supplemental grant is a pilot program limited to 40 homes and will last until that number of homes has been served, unless extended.

## What other incentives could I use to help me accomplish my goals?

* If you are low-income and you have a good roof, or have your roof replaced using this grant, you may be eligible for free help weatherizing your home under the [Weatherization Assistance Program](https://energyfundsforall.org/weatherization-assistance-program/).
* Check the [Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency](https://www.dsireusa.org/) (DSIRE) for additional incentives that may be offered by your state, local government, or utility, as well as important federal, state, and local policies. For questions regarding DSIRE, contact Justin Lindemann (NC Clean Energy Technology Center) at [jplindem@ncsu.edu](mailto:jplindem@ncsu.edu).
* Check out our (non-exhaustive) [list of non-federal funding](https://energyfundsforall.org/non-federal-funds/) from other sources that may fit your goals.
